Peoria – Willie D. White, 85, of Peoria, died at 8:15 p.m., Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at Heartland Healthcare Center of Peoria. Born February 12, 1925 in Okolona, Mississippi, a son of Willie and Mattie White Drake.
Surviving are two daughters, Pamela M. White of Peoria and Desiree L. (Steven) Wilson of Peoria; one son, Michael A. (Brenda) White of Peoria; his children's mother, Ada Martha White of Peoria; three grandchildren, Erin Colbert-White of Athens, Georgia, Amanda White of Peoria and Michael A. White II of Peoria; and several nieces and nephews.
Willie was preceded in death by one son, Mario; one daughter, Crystal; and two brothers and one sister.
He was a 1945 graduate of Spalding Institute.
Willie was a United States Marine Corps veteran serving in World War II and the Korean War.
He worked for Caterpillar Inc. for forty-two years, retiring in 1990. He was a general contractor for Illinois Central Construction Inc., and a professional photographer.
Willie was active in various local civic causes such as, Civil Defense, NAACP, activist for Southside of Peoria, Boy Scouts of America leader, founder of the Southside Improvement Association, president of the Homeowners Cooperative Association, recipient of The Urban Service Award from the Office of Economic Opportunity, and was inducted into the African-American Hall of Fame receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions.
Willie loved sports and was a golden glove boxer, member of Peoria Rockets Semi-pro football team, and an inductee of the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame as member of 1942 Spalding football team.
He attended St. Mark Roman Catholic Church in Peoria and was a member of Knights of Columbus Spalding Council 427.
A special thanks to the staff of Heartland Health Care of Peoria and Hospice Compassus.
A memorial service will be at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 10, 2010 at The Wilton Mortuary in Peoria. Pastor Yvonne and Rev. Carl Evans will officiate. Cremation rites have been accorded.
