PEORIA?William B. Kirkwood, residing at the Christian Buehler memorial Home, 3415 N. Sheridan Road, Peoria, IL, 61604, died there at 8 a.m. on July 10, 2010.
He was born on June 29, 1919 to Alexander S. and Frances F. Kirkwood in Kansas City, MO.
He was married to Joan Garry in Minneapolis, MN on April 22, 1950. She survives and also resides at the Buehler Home.
?Bill? also is survived by two sons, Thomas P. Kirkwood of Peoria, William G. (and Lee) Kirkwood of Johnson City, TN; one son-in-law, Richard Sparks of Morton, IL; four grandchildren, Susan (Andrew) Kirkwood Ward of Knoxville, TN; Elizabeth Kirkwood of Knoxville, TN; Stephanie Sparks of Chicago, IL and Brent Sparks of Pekin, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Patricia Sparks.
During WWII, Bill served his nation as a Technical SGT in the Army Ordinance Corp in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. When the war ended he resumed his career with the General Motors Acceptance Corporation and retired as that company?s Peoria Branch Manager in 1979.
During his busy and happy family and work life, he gave long years of service as a board member and president to the Peoria Association of Retarded Citizens (PARC). He also served as president and board member of the Peoria Allied Agencies and as a board member of the Community Workshop and Training Center.
He was a member of First Federated Church where a memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, 2010, followed by a reception at the church. Rev. Dr. Forrest Krummel will officiate. Cremation rites have been accorded. The Wilton Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Inurnment of ashes will be in the columbarium at First Federated Church.
