Donald R.  McRaven
PEORIA - Donald Ray McRaven, 80, of Peoria passed away at 3:47p.m.Thursday, January 26, 2017 at Manor Care of Peoria surrounded by his family.

Don was born July 26, 1936 in Granite City, IL to Thomas and Lillian (Wilson) McRaven. After his undergraduate studies at Southern Illinois University, Don attended the University of Illinois Medical School in Chicago. While a medical student, Don fell in love and married Lois Ann Jones. They wed on December 23, 1961 in Jamestown, NY. Don is survived by his sister Carolyn (John) Roscich of Naperville, IL; his children: Susan (Cameron) Parr of Chillicothe, Christine (Craig) Parr of Chillicothe, Rebecca (Steven) Russell of Avon Lake, OH, and Stephen (Kirsten) McRaven of Dunlap; and his grandchildren: Joshua (Julie), Justin, Jordan and Jessica Parr, Anna and Alan Parr, Michael, Matthew, and Mitchell Russell, Maya, Riley, and Ethan McRaven.

He was preceded in death by wife, Lois; his parents, Thomas and Lillian; his brothers, Thomas and Harold; and his granddaughter, Reese Marie McRaven.

After his residency at St. Francis Medical Center (SFMC), he practiced medicine in Havana, IL. While in Havana, Don was drafted for the Vietnam War. He served at Fort Riley, Kansas after receiving specialized training in treating jungle diseases from Walter Reed Army Medical Center. After his discharge, he completed his fellowship in cardiology at the University of Iowa.

In 1972 Don was recruited to develop an adult cardiology program at SFMC. He founded Cardiovascular Medicine which later became HeartCare Midwest. Don had many other contributions to the Peoria area medical community. He helped develop a paramedic curriculum and program for the two Peoria ambulance companies which later became Advanced Medical Transport (AMT). He established the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and Health Fitness Program at SFMC. He served as an Assistant Professor of clinical medicine at the University of Illinois, Peoria School of Medicine.

Don felt a deep connection to St. Francis Medical Center. He was honored to serve with the greatest care and love alongside administrators, physicians, nurses, and all employees.

Don enjoyed reading, tennis, family vacations, and the St. Louis Cardinals. In his later years, he loved attending his grandchildren's activities. His grandchildren have fond memories of swimming in Papa's pool.

Don was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church for over 40 years. He taught Sunday School and served as an Elder. He loved his church family and developed lifelong friendships. Don also enjoyed giving of his time to various boards including Young Life and Salvation Army.

Funeral services will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church on Monday, January 30, 2017 at 11 a.m. with Dr. Bryan Chapell and Rev. Kerry Frantz officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, January 29, 2017, at Grace Presbyterian Church and one hour prior to the funeral service on Monday at the church. A private burial will take place at Swan Lake Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace Presbyterian Church, American Heart Association, or Salvation Army.
