PEORIA – Benjamin Meister, 84, of Peoria, died at 10:19 a.m., Saturday, January 16, 2010, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center Emergency Room.
He was born July 18, 1925 in Burlington, Oklahoma to Noah Andrew and Cora Sorgen Meister. He married Marilyn Johnson in April 1953 in Peoria. She preceded him in death in January 2005, in Jensen Beach, Florida.
Also preceding him in death are two brothers, Clarence and Melvin Meister and two sisters, Hazel Meister and Gladys Welsh.
Surviving are his sons, Christopher (Judy) Meister of Monroe, North Carolina and Clifford Andrew "Andy" Meister of Laurie, Missouri; his grandson, Gregory Franklin Meister of Dunlap and his granddaughter, Raia Meister of Monroe, North Carolina, and several nieces and nephews.
He was a United States Army veteran, serving in World War II.
He attended Bradley University, receiving a Bachelors Degree and Masters Degree in Journalism in 1948. After graduation, he taught high school English in Danvers and Plano, Illinois. He later moved to Peoria and began teaching junior high English and Science at Whittier School in 1959, and later became the seventh and eighth grad science teacher at Washington School, from which he retired in 1983 after a 35 year teaching career.
He was a member of Twelve Oaks Community Church, where he was an active member and served on the board.
He was a member of the Peoria Federation of Teachers, the Peoria Area Retired Teachers Association, and was made an honorary member of the Illinois Junior Academy of Science in 1986.
He was a member of the "Pals of the Saddle" band for over 50 years, singing and playing guitar.
Services will be at 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 20, 2009, at the Wilton Mortuary. Church ministers will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the mortuary. Burial will be Parkview Cemetery in Peoria.
Memorials may be made to Twelve Oaks Community Church in Peoria.
