PEORIA—Joanne Adele Kiest, 88, of the J.C. Proctor Endowment Home, died at 9:59 a.m. Friday, February 5, 2010 in the emergency room at Methodist Medical Center.
Born March 6, 1921 in McGregor, Iowa, a daughter of Dr. J. Frederick and Hilda Lungwitz Walter, Joanne married A. Vernon Kiest February 5, 1944 in McGregor, Iowa. He died November 17, 1979 in Peoria.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Jo (Tom) Ackerman of Temple, Texas and Marsha Kiest of Waimea, Hawaii, two nieces and one nephew and a sister, Mary Warren of Winterset, Iowa.
She graduated from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa in 1942 with a B.S. degree in Foods and Nutrition. She spent a year in a dietetic internship at Michael Reese hospital in Chicago and was a registered dietitian.
She spent several years as Assistant Dietitian at the Methodist Medical Center, and, also, was a consultant Dietitian at the John C. Proctor Endowment Home. Joanne and her husband owned the Personnel Placement Service, a private employment agency, and she managed it from 1958 to 1968.
She was a former member of the American Dietetic Association and the Illinois Dietetic Association. She was a former member of the Electa Chapter Order of the Eastern Star.
She was a member of the Peoria Area Family and Consumer Sciences and the Peoria Y.W.C.A., where she was active in water aerobics. She enjoyed playing cards and was an avid bridge player.
She was a Charter member of the Volunteer Corp. Board at the Methodist Medical Center and served as its first President. She volunteered at the John C. Proctor Endowment Home and served two terms as President of KSSL, and was chairman of its gift shop and other volunteer activities.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Peoria which became the United Presbyterian Church for over 50 years, and the Priscilla Circle.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at The Wilton Mortuary. Rev. Dr. Randall Saxon will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before services at the mortuary. Burial will be in Springdale Cemetery.
