PLACERVILLE, CA - Dorothea Remmel Winslow passed away on Tuesday, April 18 in Placerville, California; she was 91 years old. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, retired Air Force Col. Joe G. Winslow; born & raised in Peoria, Illinois.

Dorothea was born in Romania in the town of Anina on November 16, 1925. Even as a child, her interest in art was profound and lead to schooling in Hanover, Germany. Separated from her family, she was nearly 14 years old when World War II began. Her stories of what she survived in those years were amazing. After the War, she was able to emigrate to England and studied to become a nurse. In 1954, she immigrated to the United States.

Thea, as her family called her, was a kind and gentle soul. She had a loving and generous heart and was always giving to others. She had a soft spot for animals whether big or small, furry or feathered. Art was always her passion which included artistic painting, sewing, embroidering, needle work, gardening and cooking. She made many of her clothes including her wedding dress. She landscaped her home which was to be featured in Sunset Magazine until a record freeze damaged her work and she withdrew from their offer. She grew fruits, vegetable and flowers which she preserved and entered into County and State Fairs accumulating over 2000 award ribbons and two Golden Bears in 1989 & 1991…California highest award at the California State Fair. She became friends with countless people.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 24, 2017, at the Lutheran Cemetery in Peoria. Her body will lay in rest next to her family by marriage; the Wolschlag family.
