Marilou Sutherland died at 2:00pm on Thursday, May 18, 2017. She was 83.

Marilou was born on May 3, 1934 in Farmington IL to John and Mary Neal Lopeman. She married Ralph D. "Corky" Sutherland on April 24, 1955. He preceded her in death. Surviving is one son; Michael Sutherland of Peoria IL, two daughters; Lori Sutherland of Atlanta GA and Amy Sutherland of Arlington Heights IL along with grandson Galen Sutherland Giese of Madison WI. Her parents and brothers, Dean, Don, and Lee Lopeman also preceded her in death. Her sister Donna Lopeman Bane of Janesville WI survives.

Marilou was raised on a farm in Yates City IL where she milked cows and enjoyed riding horses. She is a graduate of Yates City High School. She worked at RL Lynch and Co. and later at Equitable Life Assurance before starting her family. When her children were old enough to go to school, she went back to school and graduated from Illinois Central College with a degree in Early Childhood Education.

Marilou worked at University United Methodist Church and later First Federated as a preschool teacher. She also volunteered her time as a Sunday School Teacher, Cub Scout Leader, Girl Scout Leader, and as a room-mother at Concordia Lutheran School.

She was a long time and active member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Peoria IL, where she served as a member of the Women of Mt. Calvary.

Corky and Marilou traveled extensively, which included trips to every continent. She also enjoyed reading books, line dancing, and spending time with her many friends.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Cohen, Dr. Liu, Illinois Cancer Center, and the excellent care provided by Proctor Place where she lived.

A funeral service will take place at 11:00am on Saturday, May 27, 2017, with the visitation starting at 9:30am at Trinity Lutheran Church (135 NE Randolph Ave. in Peoria, IL), with Pastor Barry Long officiating. A private burial will take place at Swan Lake Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church (908 W Hanssler Pl, Peoria, IL 61604) or Illinois Cancer Care Foundation (8940 N. Wood Sage Road, Peoria, IL 61615).
